Journal entries in 'Dear Diary' for February, 2007At Last, A Proper DarkroomEver since I started developing my own film in early 2006 (and really, for years before that) I've wanted to buy an enlarger and learn to make my own prints. Developing film is fine, and you do have a degree of control in that process, but it's really in the printing process that the fun really starts. Or so I'd always heard. Finally I get to find out for myself; for the last few months I've been working on setting up a darkroom, and two days ago I made my first black and white print. And it's just as fun as I'd always heard. Permalink | Revision: 1 | (3 comments) | Comments are closed for this entry. Keep not standing fixed and rooted, briskly venture, briskly roam.Today I went Geocaching. I discovered the activity a few months ago, right around when I was moving up to Covington, but I was too busy to try it. This weekend I decided I'd give it a shot. Geocaching is a sort of game or sport in which strangers will hide a small 'cache' (varying in size from a film canister to a large chest) somewhere inconspicuous, note the coordinates with a GPS unit, and then post the information on a website. Other 'players' will read about the cache, make a note of the coordinates, and set out with their own GPS unit to try and find it. Caches always contain a small notebook that serves as a log, and each player who finds the cache is supposed to sign the log to describe when they found it, and what they thought of the experience. Caches also often contain random trinkets (they can be anything from dollar-store toys to CDs to computer hardware to action figures), and you're encouraged to take some and leave others in trade. February 2, 2007 at 12:55 PMAs my cooking repertoire has expanded, I've found myself cooking more and more often, and I'm finding it really enjoyable. I'm still not making anything really elaborate, but it's nice to be able to make things like egg salad or broccoli & cheese casserole. The other day Cat and I made Tres Leches, and it turned out quite well. It's really satisfying to realize I'm hungry and then craft a meal from the original ingredients to sate that hunger.
