What to do with the Photo Gallery

Whenever I come across the website of someone who is interested in photography, their photo gallery tends to only contain the few outstanding pieces they're really proud of. This stands in stark contrast to my own, which contains pictures of anything and everything. As a result, the few pictures I take that aren't just snapshots are sort of lost amid the malestrom of the mediocre.

I'm trying to figure out how to somehow gather together all the pictures that I feel actually have some artistic value and make them available in once place. There's my deviantART page, but I'd like to have something here on my own server, with the same look-and-feel (ironic, since my current photo gallery looks completely different than my main site). I've already started adding a categorization feature to the photo gallery, where each photo can be marked as Artistic, Snapshot, or Not Mine (or any number of other categories I could add). I could keep working on that, and provide a way to search by category or to filter which pictures are shown, but I don't think that's the best solution. Of course, I could just set up a second photo gallery containing duplicates of just the pictures I want to highlight, but that's not a very clean solution either.

Of course, I'm thinking about all of this from the webmaster's perspective. What I'd like to know is what makes the most sense from the user's point of view. Disregarding how the site works and all that, what would seem most intuitive to you, coming upon my site? How would you expect it to be layed out? A link that takes you to the "photo gallery", and lower down another link for the "snapshot archive"? Should they be two parts of the same "gallery", or two separate, unrelated parts of my website? Neeed iiinpuuut!

It depends. How do you plan to promote your "artistic" gallery?

Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean by 'promote.' Basically, I just want there to be an easily accessible method of showcasing the pictures I feel are sort of the "cream of the crop" - there'd probably only be one or two maximum from any given shoot. I wouldn't want to have a bunch of duplicates side by side, etc. Just a collection of the shots I'm happiest with.

But then of course I don't want to get rid of the current photo gallery - I want to also have something where I can continue to post all the pictures I take that aren't blurry or otherwise fail.

I guess the main problem is that the photo gallery as a site still isn't very pretty, and I'd like something like this to be attractive, not just a link to a roll in the photo gallery. I guess I could work on improving the appearance of the photo gallery...
