Apparently I'm an incompetent blinker

Posted on November 16, 2004 at 4:35 AM in 'Dear Diary'

I went back to the eye doctor today and she said I still have a slight bit of wear on my left cornea and that she'd still like to keep me without contacts for another week, but she recognizes that I've already been three weeks without them so she went ahead and gave them to me but asked that I try to limit my use this week, and come back in next Monday to see if there's any improvement or worsening.

She said it's happening because of lack of moisture, and when she looked up close, she noticed that I don't close my eyes all the way when I blink, and the part of the eye that stays open is exactly where the problem is. So apparently my woes are due to my inept blinkery[1]. Perhaps I should set aside an hour a day for blinking practice.

[1] Yes, that is now a word.

But your glasses are so cute -- what's the problem?

Haha, well contacts are so much better to use (and it is SO good to hear). Glasses move the lens farther away from your eye, which causes greater optical distortion when looking off-center. Plus they don't cover the entire field of view, especially when they're relatively small like mine, so I feel like Batman when I have to turn my entire head to look at anything. Imagine how hard it makes it to surreptitiously check out girls.

But at the same time, it's nice how quickly you can switch from comfort to good vision. I was used to contacts, where once you've taken them out for the night, if you then decide you want to watch something on TV or something, you have to decide whether it's worth the trouble of putting them back in, and usually decide it's not. With glasses I keep being pleasantly reminded that if I want to see well again, all I have to do is put my glasses back on. A miracle of modern technology, that is.

So they both have pros and cons :)

Nothing wrong with glasses, kids. Contacts dry out in my eyes after about, oh, 5 minutes. They make my eyes feel like dry little chippy things.

And I don't seem to have the Batman-can't -surreptitiously-check-out-girls problem, but that could just be me.

True, you've always been very good at subtly checking out girls. :)
