Tonight as I was driving home from work, I noticed this large wooden tank or some other sort of cylinder which they've built by the side of the road. I have no idea what it could be for, but the area is pretty industrial, so it doesn't surprise me to see it there. What perplexes me more is the fact that it's made of wood and not metal. It just seems so medieval and out of place in an industrialized society.
The area was deserted, as it was 4am, so I pulled onto a side street and drove back to the tank to take pictures. I turned off my headlights, to keep from attracting attention from passing cops or whatever, and started gathering my camera bag, tripod, etc. However, as I went to shut off the car I noticed a homeless guy climb out from the construction equipment he'd apparently been sleeping under and start walking towards me. With a sigh, I put the car in reverse and headed home.
I tend to think that homeless guys get a bad rap. I imagine most of them would be pretty nice if you're nice to them. He might have been interesting to talk to and even let me take some pictures of him or something. I was somewhat tempted to stay and see what he wanted. But at 4am in a deserted construction site near Old San Juan, with $2k worth of camera equipment in my hand and a $35k car, I didn't feel comfortable taking that risk.
I might try and go back some other time, but as much as I'm tired of seeing things at night, I don't think the tank looks quite as eerily out of place in the daytime. And the nighttime will always present the same problem in that industrial area. Oh well.

It gets dark pretty early now. You could take advantage of that and go when it isn't likely to be as deserted.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. On weekdays I go into work just as it's getting dark, but on a weekend I'd be free then. Although it's a shame, because the deserted street added to the effect. I don't think it'd look quite as cool with taillights zooming past it. But beggars can't be choosers, eh? :)

You might get lucky and it not be busy. Maybe on Sunday?
