The Return of "Music That Doesn't Suck"

I'm going to try out reviving this old feature. Just an occasional sampling of songs I think are good, with links to MP3s for each.

Soul Coughing — Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago

Just try and listen to this without bobbing your head and feeling funky as hell. You can't. The lyrics seem to be one step above scat — they are real words, but they don't seem to have any particular meaning. They just sound good and contribute another component to the melody and rhythm of the song. I want an upright bass.

Battlefield Band — One More Chorus

A fun Celtic folk song, dealing, like so many Celtic folk songs, with how fun it is to sing Celtic folk songs. Plus you get to enjoy the cool accent.

Chroma Key — Sad Sad Movie

A song so good that Kevin Moore used it twice. It first appeared on the soundtrack he did for the film Okul, and then again on the Chroma Key album Graveyard Mountain Home, which is also a film soundtrack, this time prepared as an alternate soundtrack for an obscure public service film from the '50s called Age 13.

Clann Zú — One Bedroom Apartment

Melodramatic song about dealing (badly) with love lost. It's always fun to hear about the distress of others.

Æon Spoke — Suicide Boy

Æon Spoke is the new band by Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert, formerly of famed prog-metal band Cynic. This is quite a different turn for them. The music of Æon Spoke is quite soft, melodic, acoustic guitar-based, and at times even poppy. This song is an example of one of the more upbeat and poppy tracks from the CD, but oh so good. It will stick in your head like peanut butter on the brain.
