I suck at the telephone

When you call someone on the phone, after identifying yourself, do you go right on talking, or do you stop and give them a second to process that and acknowledge you? Lately I've been doing the latter, since I know I tend to talk fast, and when you first pick up the phone you usually aren't concentrating and giving it your full attention and ready to process things. But when I say "Hey, it's Dan," and then pause, people always seem to go, "...Hi," as if they were expecting me to keep talking and are surprised they're expected to respond before I actually communicate anything. So I'm puzzled and I wonder what other people do.

i just avoid the phone like the plague (unless neccessary) for reasons like this (and am thus not entitled to give advice).

Well, I don't know if I count, since the only people I talk to on the phone are JD, Katie, and Meg, but I don't even bother introducing myself. It seems redundant since most people have caller ID, but obviously that only works if they know my number. I just kinda launch into whatever I need to tell them.

I guess if I'm calling someone I don't know, I don't really pause after introducing myself. It seems too much like making awkward small talk.

That's true, for some reason I go through this charade where I pretend caller ID doesn't exist. I do it when people call me too; even though I know who it is, I still say, "Hello?" And let them identify themselves. I think it's out of consideration for them, but I'm not sure why. It's one of those things my mind decided I should follow and I happily said, "OK, sure!" I need to stop following its ideas so blindly. It's got some really stupid ideas.
