This is why we can't have nice things

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4LSigh, it turns out I left my $700 EF 70-200mm f/4L lens on a park bench by the side of the road in St. Thomas where we stopped to take pictures on the way to the airport. I'm still paying off the credit card debt I incurred when buying it, and already it's gone. Bah. My clumsy absentmindedness is amusing when I accidentally sit on things, but less so when I lose expensive things.

Man that really sucks. you should put a paypal donation link on your blog for a "New Camera Fund". You take really good pictures. I may donate a little for the cause.

Thanks, that's very cool of you to say. Fortunately, I didn't leave the whole camera, just the nice big white lens I was so excited about. Your generosity is definitely appreciated, but I don't think I could ask people to help me replace something I lost with my own stupidity :)

We've all been there. I lost my virginity that way. Fortunately I found it a couple of days later.

Daniel, I hate to tell you this but it may be in your genes... I'm not sure if you remember, but a few years ago I wound up leaving my laptop at airport security at the Montreal airport. I just picked up myu briefcase and bag and kept on walking, and finally realized it when I was already strapped in my seat on the next flight, airplane door closed and no way to go back and get it.... aaarrgghhhhh ...you can imagine the thoughts of "how can I be so stupid" flashing in big red letters thru my mind...

Adding insult to injury, the laptop was a loaner from Compaq, and even though it was ancient and slow I had signed a form accepting that I would pay $2500 for it if it neded to be replaced. I was pretty sure this qualified. AND,to make matters even worse, I was on my way to a big budget meeting and all my data was in my laptop. Fortunately I had hard copies of the most importand stuff, but try to imagine how definitely uncool it felt having to explain to my management exactly WHY I didn't have my laptop with me.... including concerns about the data falling in the wrong hands, etc. etc...

In the end the story had a happy ending (other than the budget fiasco)... I was able to locate the person at the airport that had it and they FedExed it to me. The lady was actually pretty cool about it; strange as it may sound, apparently I wasn't the first dumb guy to leave a laptop behind......

Bottom line, now I'm so paranoid when I go thru security that there's a better chance that I'll leave my shoes behind than my laptop. :) I'm sure park benches will feel sort of the same to you from now on....
