I went to see Jarhead tonight. When I got out, around 11:45pm, I thought to myself happily, "Perfect, just in time to go in to work at midnight." And then I remembered that it was Sunday, and I didn't have work tonight, and I said, "Ah, crap."
Weekends suck when you work night shift. Unless you stay awake through Saturday and screw up your sleep schedule, you are doomed to being awake all through the lonely night and trying to find things to do to pass the dark, endless hours. It's kind of sad that I would actually rather be at work with things to do than sitting here without a care in the world.

So then you liked the movie?

Hehe, yeah I did like it. I was wondering if it would just make me mad, being against war and going to see a movie about war, but it presented (what looked like) a reasonably realistic, non-glorified rendition of it. The camerawork was also very good. It seemed there wasn't a single shot that was just taken for granted — the director made sure every shot was appealing and worth watching, rather than just being there because some plot point had to be conveyed.

Well, I'm for the war and I work for the DoD. Do you think I'll like it?

Really, I think it makes little difference what your political views are. The movie neither glorified nor demonized soldiers, and made nearly no reference to the motives behind the war. And I actually that too was accurate, because that's the impression I've gotten from talking to people in the military — when you're over there, you don't really think about politics or the reasons why you're there. You're there to do your job and that's all there is to it. The movie seemed to convey that same sense of disregard.
