I went to see Rent last night. It was another Life Aquatic-like experience — I knew it was based on the Broadway play of the same name, but I had no idea what the play was about, and hadn't heard any reviews one way or the other. And just like Life Aquatic, I was surprised by how much I liked it. It didn't quite capture my attention with obsessive delight as Life Aquatic did, but I did leave the theater convinced that I'd buy the DVD when it came out, and today I went to Borders and bought the soundtrack.
When I walked up to the box office and asked for one ticket for Rent, the girl appeared to grow concerned. "It's a musical," she warned me. I smiled and thanked her and said yes, I know. Hehe, wouldn't want to leave any of that culture lying around with no warning labels. Someone might put a preconception out.
As her warning presaged, the theater was not exactly packed. The only people there other than me were two couples, and I'm willing to bet it was the girls who provided most of the desire to see the movie. In hindsight, perhaps a guy going alone to see a musical about gay people looks suspect. Ah well, causing people to become convinced that I'm gay is the story of my life.

Haha, come on now, that was uncalled for. You made me have to decide whether or not I actually wanted to preserve spoilers :) Thanks for making me confront my feelings of lameness, jerk-ass. As you see, though, I decided that I like the movie too much to ruin the little surprise for anyone else who, like me, knew nothing about it :)

I've never seen Rent, but I have seen Team America. I thought it was common knowledge that that scene was a rip on Rent. :)

They have the AIDS--it is not as funny as the family guy AIDS song though.
