When Jenn mailed me some rolls of film to develop, she asked if there was anything Japanese I wanted her to include in the package. I said that I missed aloe yogurt and jokingly suggested that she send me some.
Her package arrived the other day and it seems she managed to fulfill my desire, to some extent. She managed to find a similar product by the same company: Aloe flavoring 'sauce'. Jenn rules :)
The packaging suggests that you add it to yogurt, fresh cheese, ice cream, or crêpes. Opening the bottle, it seems to just be aloe-flavored goo, with the color and consistency of snot. Oooo.
It also appears to be technically expired, but I figure, come on, can goo really go bad?
Fueled by my memories of the great taste of the aloe yogurt I had in Japan, I worked up my courage, got a cup of plain yogurt, and poured some goop into it. It dribbled out in clumps. Man. They don't make this easy :)
When I mixed it up and tried a bite, I found that you actually couldn't taste it for the most part. Determined to get the full experience, I tried adding a dollop right to the top of a spoonful of yogurt. Happily, I was rewarded with the sweet aloe taste I remembered. Success! In fact, the goop even has the same little clear 'bags' of aloe plant interspersed throughout. I guess that's what gave it its clumpy consistency. They're kind of like the chunks in tapioca, but larger and less firm. I call them bags because when you find one in your mouth, you roll it around with your tongue and it feels like it has a strong skin filled with gooey stuff inside. It's maybe what putting a silicone breast implant in your mouth would taste like. Except a breast implant for a mouse.
Maybe I'd better lay off the expired Japanese goop.

That aloe stuff sounds kind of gross. I thought you just rubbed it on yourself (or other people) who are afflicted with sunburns.

Sure, you closed-minded Americans limit it to that small role :) Yeah, when I was in Japan I was surprised to find Aloe yogurt and thought it sounded gross, but I tried it and was surprised to find it was actually pretty good. Since I came back, I've missed it :)

All you crazy latinos and japanese with your experimental foods; why isn't normal food that is good enough for any self respecting person not good enough for you? I'm American damn it! I need beef and potatoes.
