Today Is A Day Of Mourning

On Saturday I flew back down to PR for work. I was excited, because it meant I could go back to my beloved panadería, with the fresh-squeezed orange juice and the delicious egg-and-cheese sandwiches and the even more delicious oatmeal. But when I stopped by there, starving and ready to delight in its culinary splendors, I was shocked to find that they had closed down. I guess they just couldn't afford to stay in business without my consistent, reliable patronage. They tried to wait for me, they did, but six months was just too long for them. I never should have moved!

Now I'm regretting lost opportunities. I always meant to ask them about their oatmeal recipe — I've experimented with lots of variations but I can never manage to make anything nearly as tasty as theirs. I kept putting it off, figuring, "there's always tomorrow." But tomorrow never came. Carpe diem, my friends. You never know when that person or breakfast establishment you love so dearly will be wrenched violently from your hands by the Fates.

That is so sad! Not the closing, just the post. :P

Actually, they were closed by the health department. They had a cockroaches infestation. Sorry Dan, I guess that's why their treats were so tasty. I, was also a victim, I was another customer...

Health Department in Puerto Rico? That's how I knew you were kidding :)

You could try making the non-instant variety (like from a cylinder in a pot on the stove) and using milk instead of water; that tends to make porridgey things awesome. Gotta be careful and keep stirring, though, or the milk'll scorch to the bottom of the pan.

Yeah, I think that's the next thing to try. I always figured that it must be related to the fact that they surely make a big pot of it on a stove rather than individual-sized portions in a microwave. I already make my microwaved oatmeal with skim milk -- I've experimented going up to whole milk, with no noticeable difference. So I think maybe the stovetop thing might do it. I'll have to try that when I get back to Covington this weekend.
