Entries with tag "cooking"So apparently you can't boil milk?Enthused by Meg's suggestion, I bought a tin of McCann's Steel-Cut Oatmeal and determined to try making some oatmeal on the stovetop. The instructions on the tin call for sprinkling 1 cup of oatmeal into 4 cups of briskly boiling water, but I wanted to try it with milk. I also didn't need to make four servings, so I halved the recipe and set 2 cups of milk in a pot on high heat to boil. In less than a minute, the milk poofed up and shot out of the pot and poured all over the stove. Sigh. I'm getting way too familiar with the process of cleaning this stove. Later in the day I decided to try again, using water as the recipe prescribes, with no variation other than halving the ingredients. February 2, 2007 at 12:55 PMAs my cooking repertoire has expanded, I've found myself cooking more and more often, and I'm finding it really enjoyable. I'm still not making anything really elaborate, but it's nice to be able to make things like egg salad or broccoli & cheese casserole. The other day Cat and I made Tres Leches, and it turned out quite well. It's really satisfying to realize I'm hungry and then craft a meal from the original ingredients to sate that hunger. I don't know how to make many things yet, but I'm trying to learn new recipes little by little. Last week, Bryan and Cat made egg-salad sandwiches, and graciously shared one with me. I'm a big fan of egg salad, so I decided to try making some myself sometime. Tonight I decided to give it a shot. It's not a complicated recipe, of course, but the first time I do anything I'm always timid and certain I'm going to screw something up. The first step was boiling the eggs. It sounds like an easy enough process, but after I had warmed the eggs up to room temperature I realized I don't have a metal pot. It seemed like re-refrigerating the eggs wouldn't be good for them, so I decided to soldier on. The only thing I had that was deep enough was the glass mixing bowl from my electric mixer. I decided that I'd be able to lift it off of the stove safely despite the lack of handles, but I wasn't sure if the glass was safe to use on the stovetop (If you're reading this soon after I posted it, you may see evidence of my hesitation in my Google searches in the sidebar). Wikipedia has a picture of water being boiled in a glass pot, so I decided it was OK. Permalink | Revision: 1 | (2 comments) | Comments are closed for this entry. Damn you, British measurement system! You ruined my pancakes!Today I awoke with the urge to make something other than cereal or oatmeal. Maybe even something involving... a griddle! *dramatic chord* Permalink | Revision: 1 | (9 comments) | Comments are closed for this entry. |
