This is one i wrote soon after getting to college, about the whole experience of leaving friends behind and thoughts of a possible future. This is one of two poems of mine that I actually like (the other being Killing Prejudice).

skeezix and the real world
  by dan mccormack

The adventurous young Skeezix,
Inhabiter of the sea
Decides to test his luck
In the realm of you and me.

So off he goes, into the land
Of earth and trees and sky
In spite of all the queries
From friends who ask him why.

He rises from the ocean
And breathes air as a first,
And starts to learn that here you yearn
For water just in thirst.

Reaction to his presence
First is surprise and shock
Then soon becomes acceptance
As their ways he tries to mock.

Gradually Skeezix becomes
Socially integrated
But inside he still is one of those
From whom he's separated.

Time flows on, as do the waves
His exploits are well-known
And Skeezix attempts to ignore
The fact that he's alone.

Finally, he stands no more
And returns to his home
Just to find his friends have all
Gone off, the world to roam.
