Apprenticeship

Tonight I’ve been teaching my son how to operate a metal lathe. Awesome. He’s got a healthy respect for the machine and is doing a good job of understanding how all the gears and levers work together to make the cuts you want to make. This is one of my favorite parts of being a dad.

Gavin learns CAD

Gavin enjoyed helping me model a project in Autodesk Inventor, so he asked if we could install it on his computer. I told him Sketchup would be a better place to start, and he’s now eagerly exploring it, learning his way around by modeling an effects pedal. My son rules.

My mad scientist son

Dan: “Gavin, here’s a picture of your new babysitter.”

Naomi: “Ooh, I saw your eyebrows raise. You like her?”

Gavin: “I’m just thinking how I’m going to mutate her.”

Naomi: “I think you mean ‘manipulate.’”

Math At Breakfast

Gavin and I are always talking about math and astronomy and all sorts of stuff. This morning I helped him calculate in his head how many minutes there are in a day, and how many seconds in an hour, and he came up with the right answers. That’s pretty advanced for a second grader.
